Dear Golfer,

From Dan Lucking, General Manager: I hope you have enjoyed the recent glorious weather and have been able to get out on the golf course. If you are heading out to play, please don’t forget to pick up a pair of gloves in the unlikely event you need to use a bunker rake.

As I said recently, I hope you have all had time to login to our new intelligentgolf online system, which will allow the Club to make the most of our availability by ensuring that all the slots on our tee times are used. If you have any questions on this please feel free to send me an email or pop into the club for a coffee and a chat. 

Course Marshals

I am happy to tell you that we will have two course marshals starting very shortly. This will allow us to move back to a 1st-tee start from August 3rd and help us keep control of the new volume of golfers playing the course. As an added benefit, there will be an on-course snacks and drinks service. If you are heading out to play, please don’t forget to pick up a pair of gloves in the unlikely event you need to use a bunker rake.

Club operations

The team at Get Golfing have been working hard to transfer the information from Crown Golf in relation to your direct debits/membership fees. There are lots of legalities around this but we are nearly there! Each member will receive a communication early next week about their membership. If you do not receive anything, please do get in touch with us at the Club and we will be on hand to help sort any issues.

We have also been busy reconciling the bar levy and pro shop vouchers into one place. We are pleased to announce that the new ‘Club Cards’ have arrived on site and we are adding all of historic levies to them. Again, these will be ready early next week, so please pop into the club to collect the cards and check on your balance. These can be used for food, beverage and golfing equipment, giving former “Crown Golf” Members 10% off standard prices.

Food & beverage

From Lauren, Bar Manager: I would like to thank Members for the way they have taken to our “new normal” and I am pleased at the buzz around our “outside clubhouse”. What is really exciting is that we will be bringing the Clubhouse itself back in operation on August 1st — along with some new beers such as Moretti and a new menu of light seasonal dishes (see below).

Course maintenance update

From Adam Constable, Course Manager: Following on from the wettest winter for years, one of the toughest and most challenging periods I’ve experienced with the government lockdown to now being under new ownership this year has certainly been interesting so far. 

During lockdown all of the green keeping staff, except myself and Matt, were furloughed, which meant many areas slipped below the standards we set ourselves. Once the lockdown was lifted, we were still running with only three staff compared to our usual level but I am pleased to say, however, that we are starting to really make progress and catch up with our maintenance since Get Golfing CIO acquired Pyrford Golf Club. 

The full team were brought back from furlough the day after the sale and we have also taken on extra staff, including Bradley, another Assistant Greenkeeper to join our team. 

This has made a huge difference as we are starting to get on top of some of the finer detailing jobs. All steps around tees have now been weeded and all the bunkers (bar on three holes) are currently being weeded and maintained daily. I hope to have the rest back in play shortly. We are also making good progress with the ongoing issues with the irrigation system. Get Golfing has already invested in new heads, repairs and other bits to improve it. 

The course is starting to take shape again after the four-month lockdown set us back and it should be looking its best for the rescheduled Club Championships in September. We have lowered the hedges in the car park to aid visibility and will improve a few more areas around the clubhouse in the coming months to improve the appearance of the surrounding area. 

Further works planned  in the winter include rebuilding the bridges, which are slowly deteriorating, rodding of the drains on problem holes from last winter to prevent us sitting as wet as we did winter 2019/20.

Our first weeks with Get Golfing have been busy but very productive. Hopefully this is reflected in the course and you will join me in my excitement for what the future brings for Pyrford. 

Competition golf

Recent weeks have seen many changes on and off the golf course and also life in general. The first two qualifying competitions we have staged have gone well in terms of the temporary local rules and also the introduction of the new intelligentgolf booking and scoring system.

With this in mind, both Ray and myself have been able to work with Dan and the Pyrford Management team to re-state many of the major board competitions over the next few months and also re-introduce Midweek Qualifying Competitions now that player registration issues have also been resolved.

Club Championship

This will take place over the weekend of September 5th-6th with 18 holes each day. Both rounds will be individual qualifying medal rounds, with the 36-hole aggregate score being used for the Gross and Net champions. The usual order of play rules will be in place. Entry for this will be available on intelligentgolf shortly.

August qualifying competitions

Stableford competitions are scheduled for August 1st and 29th and the competition scheduled for August 16th has been changed to a medal format. Start times/booking details can be found on the new intelligentgolf system.

Midweek qualifying competitions

These will take place on Friday, August 7th, Thursday, August 20th, Wednesday, September 2nd, Tuesday, September 15th, Monday, September 28th, Thursday, October 15th and Thursday, October 29th. There are no set start times for midweek events — you arrange to play with another member(s), register beforehand in the Pro Shop and then leave your completed card in the box by the PSI terminal. Results will be published within 24 hours.

Major competitions

We will then have a six-week streak of board and other club competitions from September 12th through to October 17th.  All of these will take place on a Saturday and entry for all these events will be available on intelligentgolf shortly. 

These events are the Paul Hart Trophy (September 12th), Jon’s Jug/Pippa’s Pot (September 19th), Anniversary Cup (September 26th), Millennium Trophy (Pairs event on October 3rd), Autumn Bowl (October 10th) and the Smart China Cup (October 17th).

Ladies & seniors

Ladies qualifying events have also been reinstated and the first Seniors qualifying event takes place this week.

From Paul Stewart, Men’s CaptainIt has been a difficult year with so much going on just within the club in terms of the course condition, change of ownership and new scoring/booking system. There are also certain rules on handicapping and rules we have had to adhere to that has meant a delay in some of these events being reinstated. I hope this will be the next stage in regaining some kind of normality to our competitive golf at Pyrford.

From Andrew Blackman, Head Golf Professional (PGA): Has golf gone mad?! Firstly, I hope you and your families are well during this crazy time! Secondly, yes, I think golf has gone mad since it was allowed in mid-May. It’s great to see so many people coming back to the game or relearning some of the skills they once had.

My coaching diary has been extremely busy, so I thought I’d let you know about a few dates for your diary.

  • Thursday, August 13th, 2.30 – 3.30pm: Sand School, green-side splash shots made easy! £15 per person; limited spaces due to gatherings.

Seniors and Ladies Classes will start again very soon, I’ll keep you all posted with start dates and times.
