Did you watch the launch of the TGL?
With a great deal of scepticism surrounding Tomorrow’s Golf League our overall impression of the launch was strong! Compelling, engaging and most importantly fun, something that golf entertainment seems scared of.
From Tiger in the booth to the stadium format, for us, it worked! But will you keep watching?
The first match of the season The Bay Golf Club taken down by New York Golf Club 9-2.
After a fashionably late entrance, the tech-savvy indoor golf league, brainchild of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, finally teed off on Tuesday. Both were present at the custom-built SoFi Center in Florida, likely to ensure their brainchild didn’t slice into the rough on its debut.
More about the TGL
The Tomorrow’s Golf League website (tglgolf.com) explains the new concept:
TGL presented by SoFi is a new golf league, combining advanced technology with teams of top players from the PGA TOUR for two-hour weekly competitions in prime time starting in January 2025.
Six TGL teams representing six different cities will go head-to-head in a season-long competition at SoFi Center, a first-of-its-kind venue built specifically for TGL on the campus of Palm Beach State College. Matches will air on ESPN and ESPN+ in the U.S. with every shot live and all the players mic’d up, bringing unprecedented access to the competition for golf fans.
What we love
It’s Fun, first and foremost as an industry we need to sing from the hills about how much fun golf can be. For decades golf has been seen as unapproachable and elitist, that has to change – TGL might not be for everyone but much like LIV golf, in our opinion, its a step in the right direction.
It uses modern technology. With driving ranges and indoor sims more often that not becoming a customers ‘first touch’ of the game, growing on-course participation will need a transition. With the typical golf club in England still shackled in the past, haemorrhaging money while trying to uphold traditions that are no longer what customers want.
It’s Hammer Time
With several new rules, one stood out! ‘The Hammer’.
The crafty rule that turns a hole into a double-or-nothing bonanza added a spicy twist to the game. If ‘The Hammer’ is dropped before tee time, the opponents have no choice but to grin and bear it. But if the hole’s already in play, the other team can politely say, “No, thank you,” and watch their rivals’ points take a nosedive.
The Next Event
The inaugural season resumes on January 14, featuring Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club facing off against a Los Angeles Golf Club led by two-time major champion Collin Morikawa.
